  2. Nerdy Show 291 :: Moogfest (and E3) Walk With Me

The Nerdy Show Network’s flagship podcast unloads on the latest geek news and happenings!

The summer is already off to a breakneck start for both pop culture and your beloved hosts. Hosts like boR, Nicky, Jon, and… what was that other one? They used to be on the show quite a bit… oh, Cap! Our fearless leader has returned from their travels hither and thither and brought with them eclectic tales. Learn about Cap and Jon’s experiences at Moogfest – a combination science and technology conference and music festival. Hear about encounters with transhumanist presidential candidates, famed musicians, and failures at mental synthesis. Cap also gushes over the return of Twin Peaks and offers a spoiler-free primer for what’s in store.

But, while that backlog of adventuring is plenty interesting, there’s new hotness afoot: namely E3 – the year’s annual deluge of video game announcements. We eat more weird food and share our thoughts and insights on the crazy things coming from Nintendo, Ubisoft’s shocking announcement of Beyond Good and Evil 2, our skepticism towards Anthem, how amazing Spider-Man looks, and much, much more. 3. Nerdy Show Microsode: Cracking Open The Dresden Files

When The Nerdy Show Network’s flagship podcast isn’t unloading on the latest geek news and happenings, we’re diving deep into super-specific discussions and interviews.

When it comes to series that deal with magic and folklore, some of the most provocative stories are set in modern times: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural, Harry Potter… and one other cornerstone of that genre that somehow we’ve never talked about on Nerdy Show: Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files. The novels, the comics, the roleplaying game, even the much-maligned TV show are home to a plethora of paranormal pantheons and all sorts of exciting spins on popular myths.

This episode is both a spoiler-free starter-kit for the uninitiated and a walk down memory lane for those eagerly awaiting book 16. Join Dresden-philes Trench, Luke, and Arkais along with total uninitiated novice, Cap, as we explore what sets Butcher’s world apart from its contemporaries, our favorite characters and villains, and all the tie-in media. The Nerdy Show Network’s flagship podcast unloads on the latest geek news and happenings!

With little to no explanation as to why, you’ll embark on a mission to the sun, play a few rounds of Gwent, wrestle small Japanese robots, team up with Wonder Woman, discuss Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, teach you about dental hygine, and most likely stumble down many other unforeseen paths along the way! (more…)

  5. Nerdy Show Microsode: Console Clunkers & Spoofing Star Wars with Palette-Swap Ninja

When The Nerdy Show Network’s flagship podcast isn’t unloading on the latest geek news and happenings, we’re diving deep into super-specific discussions and interviews…

And this episode is BOTH those things! Cap and Brandon are joined by Palette-Swap Ninja, an obscure nerd band that recently made a big splash when they combined two pillars of 20th century pop culture into one unbelievable concept album. Dan Amrich is a game journalist turned Ubisoft community developer and Jude Kelley is a research scientist who repairs old arcade machines. With our collective powers combined, we’re unleashing a nerd podcast of an unrepellable magnitude.

First up, we take on the listener-requested topic: failed video game consoles. We’ve all seen our fair share of pie-in-the-sky, crazy flops in the ever-ongoing console wars, but Dan’s career in game journalism grants him a special perspective. In the mid-90s at outlets like Flux and GamePro he was witnessing some of the legendary travesties – including the notorious Virtual Boy. We dissect and debate just what makes a “failed” game console and get stories from Dan and Jude’s deep game nerd backgrounds, then we dive into the incredible project they’ve spent the last 5+ years working on: Princess Leia’s Stolen Death Star Plans. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Star Wars and the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ immortal classic, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band – this seamless, record-length parody tells the entire story of A New Hope. (more…)

  8. Nerdy Show Microsode: European RPG Video Games

When The Nerdy Show Network’s flagship podcast isn’t unloading on the latest geek news and happenings, we’re diving deep into super-specific discussions and interviews.

Where you’re from greatly influences who you are – especially so when it comes to creative output. So it should be no surprise that for indie game studios out of Eastern Europe, the stories they tell and the games they make are distinctly different from the usual faire: games like Metro 2033, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Gothic, and others.

Cap, Trench, Arkais, Luke, and Tony explore their favorite titles in the often overlooked, sometimes obscure, and always fascinating world of European RPG video games. We look for what makes these games decidedly different (outside of a lack of major corporate funding), discuss the books that inspired them, share our personal highs and lows, and, of course, spend plenty of time talking about the best known title of them all, The Witcher. (more…)
