E3 Vidcasts :: Nintendo Returns to Side-Scrollers

Posted by Cat on June 19, 2010

Last year at Nintendo’s E3 conference the one exciting thing they showed was New Super Mario Bros. Wii, returning the series again to side-scrolling. This year’s E3 was over-flowing with incredible new games and the return of many long-neglected characters and franchises including two blockbuster side-scrollers: Donkey Kong Country Returns and Kirby’s Epic Yarn, both which come out this Fall.

Donkey Kong’s neglect since DK64 has been painful to say the least.  Yeah, it’s fun to play with bongos and all, but none of that in any way embodies the ripe monkey essence of a true Kong game.  Retro Studios, the Austin-based game firm who gave us the Metroid Prime series has at long last returned Donkey and Diddy to the style of their original innovator, Rare, and it’s amazing.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn roped us in with incredible and innovative art direction.  The last truly great Kirby game was Kirby Supers Star for the SNES (recently re-made for the DS) and everything since has been relatively hum-drum and definitely too easy.  Epic Yarn is totally divergent from the Kirby formula of eating enemies to steal their powers, yet it is wholeheartedly imbued with Kirby’s distinct flavor.

    Aight, Chet Awesomelazer is loving this. Chet hasn’t seen a great new Kirby or Donkey Kong in a while, and really fucking needs to get his groove on. Both of them are co-op, so Chet will have to contact one of his almost 500 different friends (Really two and his brother) to get this shit going. Chet was wary of Epic Yarn because it seemed so different from previous iterations, but now that he’s seen some hands-on play, he’s actually pretty excited. He misses copy abilities, but the crazy yarn shit you can pull off seems like it may make up for that.
    Donkey Kong is looking a LOT like Country and Chet loves this. Donkey Kong Country was the second game he’s ever played, and he was just WAITING for another DK-style platformer to hit the market. Chet grew up with that game, so to see something like that on the Wii… well…
    It almost brings a tear to Chet’s eye. ALMOST.
