As we learned in a recent episode of Community, Angela is definitively “The Boss”, but who, or what, is the BROSS? Nerdy Show has an answer: Meet Michael Bross – video game score composer. The man has been working in the industry since mid-90s point and click adventures, is responsible for two phenomenal Oddworld scores: Munch’s Odyssey and Stranger’s Wrath, and is in the process of scoring two of this year’s biggest forthcoming games: Firefalland Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One. Join Mike, Cap, Brandon and Jon for a rousing interview with the Bross himself – discussing his upcoming projects, the writing process, and the life and times of a game composer.
But that’s not all the video game action we’ve got, no! We also review Rockstar Games’ latest blockbuster, L.A. Noire and Subsonic’s NEO controller for PS3. AND we have Sci-Tech too! We’re joined by Nerdy Show correspondent, Jessica Uelmen for her first-hand experience at this year’s Bay Area Maker Faire. That, schizophrenic robots, and more below!
Aw yeah comic books! May is a cool month to be a nerd. It’s host to Free Comic Book Day, the beginning of the summer movie blitz, as well as May the Fourth… May the Fourth might take precedence as an international Star Wars holiday, but it’s also a cool day for comic fans… a day with special relevance to Morning Glories. You may remember Morning Glories from our Top 20 Nerdy Things of 2010 episode where we raved about Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma‘s incredible comic. This book fills a gaping, Lost and Y: The Last Man-shaped void in our hearts and now we’ve kidnapped the artist-writer duo to “interview” them. Will they spill the beans and share some secrets? Let’s hope!
Join Mike, Cap, Brain (with a special appearance by Aaron) for some steaming hot comic talk. What books do you need to track down from Free Comic Book Day? What did we think of the Thor movie? How does Brian go about writing his awesome Free Comic Book day stories? What’s the secret of the Young Justice book you’ll never see? What’s in store for the Morning Glories kids? All these questions and more will be answered here! Well, maybe not the Morning Glories one… but MOST questions will be answered. Tune in!
If here’s two things you can guarantee about Nerdy Show (aside from dick jokes) it’s that sooner or later we’ll bring Marc With a C on the show and sooner or later we’ll cross the streams with OverClocked After Dark. You must be a very lucky boy and/or girl, ’cause this episode’s got BOTH.
For the first time since last ReMixMas, Nerdy Show and OCAD are together again, but this time Nerdy Show is packin’ some serious heat: Orlando’s own Marc With a C – nerdy singer-songwriter extraordinaire. With Marc and the musical tour de force of Stevo, aka Level 99 on the show- this must be a music episode. Well, sorta kinda.
We jam with Marc about his most ambitious project yet: his forthcoming concept album, Motherfuckers be Bullshittin’. It’s a complex beast- right down to the album art! Learn its secrets here and then listen to the whole thing in a special live event this Sunday (May 22nd) on 8-Bit FM. Of course, we’ve got OCAD on, and what would a Nerdy Show After Dark be with out some fanfic reading? We’ve got something for everybody two very NSFW Marvel stories and two um.. interesting takes on other franchises. What they lack in eroticism they make up for in- buh whaaa?!
Portal 2 is one of the biggest game releases we’re going to see this year. If you live in a major metropolitan area you’ve no doubt seen the billboards all over. Yeah, it’s kind of a big deal. The Portal series is a genre-bending mind-twisting phenomena, and we freaking love it. Join video game hosts Brandon and Jonna along with Cap, Hex, Jon and special guests Jonna’s Portal 2 partner Erik, and newly christened Nerdy Show correspondent, Luke McDuffee for a Portalrific episode discussing the new game.
But that’s not all, we get into some heated discussion over the latest things shakin’ over in video game land such as the Sony-crippling PSN hack. We also debut a brand new reoccurring Nerdy Show segment: Luke’s Late to Everything. With Luke’s Late to Everything, our very own Luke McDuffee shares with us his experiences getting into something a bit… old hat – something everyone has read, played or done – any medium, and for whatever reason Luke has missed out on it… until now. In our inaugural episode Luke takes on a doozy: Chrono Trigger.
In 2009 Nerdy Show was rated the #3 best radio show in Orlando, by the Orlando Weekly‘s annual Best of Orlando List. The list is compiled by online voting and the final list represents the most significant honor that an Orlando institution can achieve. Being honored in 2009 was a major deal for us, but in 2010, no dice. 2011 voting has just started up and we want to own this!
Best Local Radio Personality: Nerdy Show’s Triforce Mike!
Best Local Website: Nerdyshow.com
Best Local Blog: Nerdy Show!
Best arts festival: Nerdapalooza (It’s a Music & Arts Festival this year)
Best Radio Station: 8bit FM
But to achieve all this greatness we’ll need your help!
You have to fill at least 15 of the categories for your votes to count. And you can only vote the same thing 5 times.
Maybe you don’t live in Orlando and don’t know what any of this is – no worries! Allow us to offer up our suggestions of fine local institutions that have all been given the Nerdy Show seal of approval. Many of them are things we’ve mentioned on the show and musicians whose music we play all the time! Perhaps if you’re vacationing to Orlando for Nerdapalooza you’ll have a chance to check some of these cool places and people out. We’ve got a lot of suggestions for you to choose from for your 15, but the most important ones are in BOLD.
See below for the list and get voting, the poll ends at midnight, June 15th.
The nerd world revolves around pop culture. Our collective psyche feeds off of our love for the cool and kitschy things that we obsess over. For some of us it manifests in collecting or cataloging, for others it manifests in creativity and fan love. These days a little fan love can go a long way and in this Culturesode we chat with three gentlemen who are making a profession out of it.
Join Cap, Hex, Tony and Kristin for two lively interviews three gents balls deep in some pro fan love. First up, the man who’s brutally realistic Ninja Turtles portraits have taken the internet by storm: Dave Rapoza. In addition to drawing crazy-amazing pro fan art, Dave is a freelance artist who regularly works for Wizards of the Coast and has created some killer art for Magic: The Gathering. Next we speak with the ringmasters of Epic Win Burlesque: magician Nelson Lugo and rapper Schaffer the Darklord. They’ve recently begun the second season of their whirlwind-success nerdy burlesque performance, debuted their “Rated R For Violence” show, and have announced that they’re going to be hosting this year’s Nerdapalooza. All three of these guests specialize in very visually stimulating work, so open up their respective links in some new tabs, press play, and let us entertain you:
Greetings Nerdy Show fans! I’m sure you’ve all noticed the absence of the Nerdy Strip these past few months. What’s that? You haven’t?
…
Anyway, I’m still makin’ the arts! There’re a couple of projects I’ve been toiling away at that I’m sure you’ll all shit yourselves over (I know I will.) So, while I keep my nose to the grindstone, enjoy this look at what my process looks like. Sort of. This is the sort of behind the scenes thing that’s included in the donation perks (along with unreleased sketches.)
