Episode 29 :: Fight the Power [Button]

August 25th, 2010

fight the power buttonMy fellow Nerds, a crisis is upon us. As some of you may have heard, a recent high court ruling in the UK has greatly jeopardized the future of the Chiptunes movement. The hardware integral to creating music from current and retro gaming systems is now illegal. This aggression will not stand, man – and we won’t sit by idly while our bothers and sister across the pond cannot pick up their Gameboys and bleep bloop in public. …Did that come out wrong? NEVERMIND.

In response to this ruling, Nerdy Show has created Fight the Power, an organization and movement dedicated to fighting for the rights of nerd musicians and the right to make nerd music of all kinds. Read the Fight the Power Manifesto, join the Facebook Page and find out what you can do to join in the fight.

In this episode we elaborate on the plight in the UK and talk with British chiptune musician, Pixelh8 about his feelings on the ruling, what he’s doing to turn the tide, his upcoming projects, and how BBC America butchers British television. We’re also joined by chiptune beatsmith: DJ RoboRob, calling all the way from Iraq, and yo-yo master and chiptunes rapper: Doctor Popular. All that plus a surplus of cool video game news, Mike gets weirdly (and disturbingly) political, and crackpot Russian conspiracy theories – oh boy!

As though we needed to further emphasize their relevance Chiptunes just recently got its own showcase at PAX Prime!! We also want to give a shout-out to a handful of WPRK DJs who are taking up the Fight the Power cause and dedicating their radio shows to Chiptunes awareness: Flying High in the Mushroom Kingdom, Marc with a C‘s radio show, the Real Congregation and the Freaking Geek Show are doing a combo show for five hours of pixelated political partying! You can catch Flying High in the Mushroom Kingdom in the taint of this Friday night/Saturday morning at 1 AM – 3 AM, and the Freaking Geek and Real Congregation mashup next Monday night/Tuesday morning from 1 AM – 6 AM. These are, of course, Eastern time, so plan accordingly!

This won’t be the last you see of Fight the Power! We have big plans including not just for fighting hate on the chip community, but also fighting big corp wherever they stick their head in the nerd’s world.

Episode 28 :: Fettophiles

August 21st, 2010

FettophilesA short while ago… Somewhat nearby…

Star Wars Celebration V came to the Orlando Convention Center!  How convenient! Cap and Hex bravely ventured into that wretched hive of scum and villainy to get the low-down on this intergalactic hoedown.  This year’s Celebration honored the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back – a momentous occasion, and it also marked the Last Tour to Endor, the closing of the classic Star Tours ride.

Four days of non-stop Star Wars, countless hours of waiting in line, and a fair amount of pent-up aggression have led to a Lucas-sized BLOCKBUSTER of an episode.  It’s too big to be a space station and will definitely rip your arms off , but hold your Tauntauns kids, this is STAR WARS – how were we ever gonna contain it in a normal-sized episode?  You could be waiting sixteen years before we do a follow-up to this one

In this episode we share the highs and lows of the Celebration and relive myriad panels including secrets of the NEW Star Tours, season 3 of Clone Wars, the EXCLUSIVE videos Warwick Davis showed, inappropriate jokes from Anthony Daniels and Carrie Fisher, TOR and The Force Unleashed 2, Seth Green and the Robot Chicken panel, and of course, The MAIN EVENT: George Lucas and John Stewart, which Hex stood in line overnight to see!  Since we’re such Fettophiles we also hit up BOTH Boba Fetts for interviews – the original Jeremy Bulloch and young Boba Fett, Daniel Logan!  Perhaps you remember back in Episode 10: Geek Mythology when we interviewed Jabba the Hutt’s right-hand man, Dave Barclay?  Well now we’ve got his left-hand man – Toby Philpott and the man behind his sultry figure and gorgeous eyes, John Coppinger.  They share with us what it’s like being so close with the baddest gangster in the Star Wars universe as well as their other illustrious exploits in the world of movie creatures.  We also had a chat with Julian Glover who portrayed one of the Empire’s greatest tacticians and leader of the AT-AT attack on Hoth, General Veers as well as the scheming Walter Donovan in Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade and Bond villain Aristotle Kristatos.  All that plus frequent rants about the prequels AND a kick ass contest to win EXCLUSIVE Star Wars Celebration goodies (see below)… something in this episode will get you excited about Star Wars, even if your heart has been frozen in carbonite.

Episode 23 :: Powering Up to ‘Palooza!

July 14th, 2010

PALOOZA!Someone set us up the bomb, ’cause this ish is about to explodeNerdapalooza 2010 is this weekend and we’re MCing it!  In order to power up for this momentous occasion we’re pre-gaming stating NOW on energy drinks and chili dogs in-between running obstacle courses for gold rings… basically gaining a starman infinity buzz that’s gonna last all weekend.  If we seem distant it’s ’cause we’re on another realm fumbling around or Chaos Emeralds… What am I even talking about anymore?  Hey!  What the God damn is a “palooza” anyway?  We’d better find out!

As part of our preparation we’ve been joined by the high-class nerd musician George Hrab, a prime figure in the skeptic music scene.  He talks about some of the cool stuff he’s got in store for us at the festival, what being a “skeptic” is all about, and the importance of killer album art.  RPG fans, get ready for an intense Dragon Quest IX review that will carpet bomb you with harsh truths as our man, Brandon picks apart this globally-anticipated game.  Wash all that down with some wearable bacteria, lesbian mice, and video game industry drama.. and don’t blame us if you’ve got a raging hangover.  SEE YA AT THE SHOW!

Episode 021 :: More Than Meets the Eye

June 30th, 2010

More Than Meets the EyeHey Nerds, what do you chee-choo-chee-choo into?  A truck?  A sports coupe?  A microscope? A dinosaur with robot Down’s?  No matter what kinda doohickey you’ve got folded up inside you, if you’re more than meets the eye, or a robot in disguise, this episode’s for you.

The Transformers might be reeling with the ill effects of their super-shitty mainstream blockbuster films, but that doesn’t mean that America’s favorite Cybertronians are down for the count – hell no!  This past week was the annual Transformers celebration, BotCon and the release of an EPIC Transformers video game, War For Cybertron, that does what no Transformers story has ever done before: chronicle the planet-dividing civil war between Autobots and Decepticons.  It’s never the wrong time to show your love for something way cool and nerdy, but even better when the stars align so you can do it right!

In this episode we talk about our favorite incarnations of the Transformers, the glory of the 1986 animated film, and much more – including what secret things Nerdy Show transforms into, and interviews with indie comics cool guy Jeffery Brown author of the astounding Transformers parody Incredible Chang-Bots, and Dr. Vern of sci-fi rock band, Sci-Fried whose music is coming soon to both Nerdapalooza and a similarly-themed major cable network.  All that plus SCIENCE and… a girl!?

Episode 021 Accessory :: The WTF of The Headmasters

We get into some pretty zany Transformers talk in this show, and it’s cool as hell, but this… this is in a world all it’s own.  An accessory to the action robot that is Episode 21, where not only do we get into some more hardcore Transformers talk, but we attempt to figure out one of the most confusing and ill-explained pieces of Transformers lore: The Headmasters.

Episode 013 :: Dystopia

April 21st, 2010

dystopia 300In the past, there was a vision of the future that was in ruins. There were also hover cars, laser guns, robits, and all kinds of awesome other stuff.  That was future supposed to be yesterday.  Where’s our goddamn dystopia?! Fortunately, The Protomen were more vague about when our ruined future will come.  200x could be anytime this century!  When it finally comes it’ll be in all sorts of yummy flavors such as Strawberry Homicide Awareness and Pink Lemonade Rebreather – yum!

We talk about Blade Runner, Final Fantasy VII, Brazil, and other popular favorites from pop culture’s ruined tomorrows and we’re joined by THE PROTOMEN (all of ‘em) for their second appearance on Nerdy Show.  (Check out their first appearance back in Season 1).  We also discuss the glorious comic book announcements made at C2E2 and Cap reports on what he saw at this year’s Major League Gaming Championship including interviews with two pro players, SK from the Halo 3 team, Triggers Down and ESAM the best Pikachu in Smash Brothers Brawl.

Episode 900 :: Bad-Ass’d

March 24th, 2010

bad-ass'd 300What the heck!? We’re already at Episode 900!! Must be because, just like Deadpool, we’re so BAD-ASS!! If you don’t already have a pair, get ready to grow one, ’cause this episode is starring some of the manliest men who’ve dipped their wick into geekdom.  No, not Nerdy Show – those guys are wusses!  We’re talking to Deadpool and Wolverine scribe, Daniel Way, smooth talkin’ space mayor, Billy Dee Williams, hard-boiled Sgt. Rock writer/artist, Billy Tucci, mister Latino machismo himself, Erik Estrada, and the somewhat meeker, but certainly strong-jawed, MC Frontalot.

How’d we score all this raw man-power? Between MegaCon and Cap’s sojourn to Austin, Texas for SXSW we wracked up an assload of interviews that are ready to blow!  So pound some beer, wrestle a hound dog, flex your glutes, drink some black coffee, eat a rare steak, and listen to this hard-boiled episode.

We guarantee you’ll grow at least one full beard… but there’s no telling where.
