Season 4 Episode 28.5 :: Microsode – Cinema Obscura

Posted by NerdyShow on November 7, 2011

Welcome to another donation-funded Microsode! Honorary Producer, Dan Blake asked us to share our favorite obscure films!  But as a nerd, what is an obscure film?  With all our nerdy specializations, and age differences – what truly makes an obscure film?  What is an obscure film? Join Cap, Hex, Colin, Jon, and Brandon as they ask all these questions and unload on what our favorite oddball films are.  It’s a rousing discussion – so rousing in fact that this microsode isn’t so micro!

Where can you see these cinematic oddities?  Check out our extensive links below!

  1. Wait wait wait wait wait…

    ..wait. Just…wait.

    THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO HAVEN’T WATCHED THE SWORD IN THE STONE!?

    Mind = Blown.

    Also, I have heard of Song of the South mostly due to Cracked. And I can certainly say that I’ve never seen it, but your summary matches up pretty will with accounts that I have heard.

  2. @Kaosubaloo

    I think the Sword in the Stone name drop was a mistake, whoever brought it up actually meant The Black Cauldron.

  3. @Cap The Sword in The Stone drop wasn’t a mistake, I was serious. Many people haven’t seen it — its not making its way around the disney circuit anymore, younger people haven’t been seeing it.

  4. @Musical_Jinn

    Oh dang! MY mistake I guess. Sheesh, what’s the world coming to? Curse you Disney vault!!! Curse you…

  5. A lot of good ones here, but personally speaking nobody else I know has heard of Robot Carnival. My favorite segment by far is “Nightmare,” basically robot Night on Bald Mountain combined with Sleepy Hollow.

  6. A few obscurities from the Old Fart era….

    — “Performance” (starring Mick Jagger). Trippy and dark Brit gangster movie,,includes a cool scene where you’re the bullet travelling through Mick’s head. Here’s the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFxfn3LakeM

    — “Zacharia”. First “Electric Western”, included various rock and soul artists as actors. Pre-Vice Don Johnson is a main character. (Didn’t include his “Boy and his Dog” since it’s pretty much got cult status.) Here’s the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3-1ZFPSaro

    — Speaking of westerns, have to include Warhol’s “Lonesome Cowboys”.(among many other of his obscurities) — a “Gay Western” that he made while recuperating from the Saldana assassination attempt. Couldn’t find a trailer, but here’s a compilation of clips from it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77OpEdQIDWc
