Has any one else heard about this Kickstarter project? It sounds like a professional studio just skipping the usual funding method.

Can’t really say I approve. For one thing it seems this is a reworking of a script the writer originally put together in 1997 but never got made, and those kinds of things tend to feel dated no matter how much it’s reworked. For another, they’re asking more than half a million dollars for a single episode. Researching the average cost for a normally produced anime series, most sources say the average cost is only $100,000-$300,000 per episode. Regardless of the quality of those 24 minutes, expecting fans to cover that extra expense doesn’t seem the way to do things. Also, I’m getting really sick of people in the entertainment industries using crowdsourcing to fund things that they have the influence and connections to finance normally. It’s like that Veronica Mars movie all over again.

Well given 10% is going to Amazon/Kickstarter fees, and 30% to backer rewards (this does seem high), that means out of the $580K, only 60% or $348K is going to the actual production of the episode. I would assume that with a normal series, some of those costs would be spread out over multiple episodes, so to me it seems like a reasonable amount. Less risky for the company producing this for sure for what is essentially a pilot episode.

But yeah, the age of the script might be an issue.

“An anime science fiction action thriller that will explore what it means to live and die well, testing the limits of all we hold dear”- This could be the elevator pitch for any anime ever made.
