I just realized that I´ve spent a lot of time in the forums moaning about new sequels to old game series. It wasn´t my intention to complain all the time, I don´t think I´m a hipster or anything, I don´t hate everything new… I think I´m just getting old and miserable.

But that gave me an idea, let´s hear some confessions: What one thing you can´t stand that everyone else seems to be completely in love with?

For a sampler I start with a heavy hitter, show this topic means business:

    I fucking hate Batman!
Fucking one percenter, emotionally unbalanced dickwad who has made it his life mission to shit on those below him.

What could he do? Use his bat-billions to support underpriviledged people´s education and basic life necessities, pay for two-faces plastic surgery and psychiatrist, fund a research into Mr Freeze´s family´s medical issues, etc. That would certainly reduce street crime and criminal impulses of the nuttier locals. Maybe go to a support group for people who have lost loved ones, get over it already! It was decades ago!

What does he do? Spends infinite money on a bat-shaped full body bullet proof west so he can go and beat up poor people who have been forced into criminal lifestyle. Collects underaged boys, does not give them body armor.

What could he disguise himself as? A poor person, someone who could not conceivably afford to be a Batman and who would be beyond the notice of influental people and tabloids.

What does he disguise himself as? A rich asshole.

    Seriously, fuck Batman. Dick.

The Tumbler from the nolan bat films. I feel so strongly about this topic I have a 16 page, unfinished document describing how I would have made it differently.

    Walking dead.

I am so sorry but it is a boring story to me. That show is just a soap opera with zombie apocalypse as a back drop.
I want to see the zombie offensive, like during the world war z book.

but i get your point @m with batman. In the cartoon I hated how he treated clayface. The man just wanted to be normal and every attempt albeit in a criminal way batman just blocks it

@Max, that looks brilliant I’m on a work trip right now, but once I’ll get the opportunity I’ll be sure to read it!

@Armadon, when so many baddies are deformed the handsome rich white male hero can easily come off as a bully.

Also, what’s the deal with his no-kill code? How would a typical Batman story go over in real life?
“Team 6 entered Osama bin Laden’s compound, punched him a couple of times, deleted his porn and while destroying his cache of weaponry burned his koran sending him into a berserk fit. Unfortunately due to our no kill policy he managed to evade capture, but when he comes back, we will be waiting!”

@M I totally agree. I saw a kill count for joker somewhere that was around 250 and that was only confirmed seen kills. I can respect not wanting to kill, but when you endanger others by not doing so that is just messed up. How many times has Joker been captured? If he kills someone every time he escapes and he escapes every institution available, there is no longer a point in capturing him. By not killing him you ensure that more people die.

I have to extend my hatred to Marvel and DC though. I am not even sure where to begin with all that is wrong with them. I guess I will start with the good. They have a huge cast of characters and a lot of them are interesting. They sometimes produce media that I enjoy consuming featuring these characters, usually animation and movies.

But the writing and stories are so inconsistent that I don’t want to even start. When you need more than one hand to count how many times a character has died and they don’t have Resurrection as a power something is wrong. When people talk about a series or character and they give it up or pick it up again depending on who is writing it, something is wrong. When you charge more than any other comic publisher for issues and your issues still have more adds something is wrong. If you compile your issues in chronological order and don’t bother to label in a way which indicates order someone is incompetent. And if you are a comic company and the best and easiest to access versions of your characters aren’t even in comic form and are prone to cancellation without warning I give up.

I like their characters Batman included even if he is a rich holier than though asshole. They do everything they can to make I don’t want to put in the required effort to actually read them.

For me I don’t need batman to kill anyone, but out of hundreds of police that had delt with joker over the years I can’t believe not one of them decided to pull the trigger.

@M Every so often I go back into it intending to split it up into a 3 part thing I could reasonably publish, so the current state of the organization may be a little off. It isn’t really intended to be 16 pages of “Look at this dumb thing, isn’t it dumb?” so much as “ok, this thing could be better, let’s see how we go about doing that.” I never got to the part where I was designing my own, which is a large part of why I haven’t really tried to do anything with it. I don’t think you should hate on something without putting something of your own back into the world as an alternative.

    @Max

I actually thought the text was a fun read, shame it wasn’t finished.

As for having to have a better option before you can criticize something… I kinda disagree with that. I think I can for example say that Prometheus writer Lindelof sucks because he also wrote Lost which also gets dumb the moment you realize he doesn’t know the answers himself either. I think it’s enough for me to watch the stuff and not like it, I don’t have to write a superior mystery in order to point out I didn’t like the ones he did.

@m Every time somebody else discovers it, I get a little more motivated to finish it. I don’t have a ton of free time right now, but I’ll get to it one of these days.

On the topic of critique: It’s so easy to find fault, and exponentially harder to create. Criticizing somebody else’s work in a strictly negative way is 1st level thinking that gives us the illusion of superiority. “I found fault with your work, so I am somehow better than you” is kind of the subconscious reward system that leads us to snark. But just finding fault with an end product ignores all the elements of how something got made in the first place. All the little compromises, the mandates from above, etc that shaped how something turned out. It also doesn’t put anything positive back into the world, or make us any better as active participants in our entertainment (or politics, or anything we have strong opinions about). To really gain that superiority, you need to consider not just what makes this thing sub-optimal (or even downright bad), but how it could be improved. I felt that if I have 16 pages of things to say regarding why I don’t like this thing, I better devote some of those pages to ways it could be improved. I don’t rewrite every movie I watch, or book I read, and I don’t think other people should either. I just don’t believe that saying “This meatloaf tastes bad” is as useful as saying “This meatloaf needs more salt.” Both of those things express discontent with the meatloaf, but only one of them helps to ensure future meatloaf will better meet your taste needs. I wanted to talk about the creative process a little bit, and put my spin on ways to design better things.
