Looks like the Night Vale guys are spinning off into a podcast network with more scripted shows. I’m honestly not sure what they’re doing that you guys aren’t, save the live show touring. Right place at the right time, knowing the right people I guess.

It’s a bunch of things I suppose. Timing and their connections being chief among them I’m sure. But there’s also consistency. They’ve been doing short paranormal programming on the regular for years. We do consistently awesome (if I do say so) narrative shows, but not with any (or intermittent) regularity and not very short. We’re seeing what we can do to overcome that. Maybe we’ll get to make up for lost time.

The consistency of that one brand they created probably helped a ton. You guys have a broad spectrum of good shows, but it could be that the shotgun approach has diluted the brand if in no other way than that it has hurt a consistent release schedule for everything. I wonder too if show length, and therefore size-on-disc of each episode is a thing? Nightvale is 20-30 minutes each, bi-weekly, so it has a pretty small on-device footprint. I personally like longer episodes, just kind of thinking out loud about some of the possible variables.

All of that is super true and is very much on our minds as we recalibrate things.

@cap, I’ve cracked the case. What you need to do is call up Vin Diesel, and get him to promote the Lightning Dogs ™ Action Figure line at next year’s Toy Fair: http://kotaku.com/in-1994-vin-diesel-was-selling-street-sharks-at-toy-fa-1755326330
