So the trailer for Jem is out. It largely feels like a missed opportunity when compared to the IP it is based on. This trailer doesn’t feature the Misfits, but it does telegraph a sort of No Doubt moment where the band gets disgruntled with Jem being the “real” star, from which point she is largely alone on stage in the trailer. I could see them leaving her and starting their own band, but there are no Misfits listed on the IMDB page. The IMDB page is alarmingly thin though, with two original voice actors from the cartoon being attached to the film with no character name specified.

Also Justin Beiber’s former manager Scooter Braun is an exec producer, so I’m sure it has that authentic “child star” feel.

Dammit, the Misfits were the best part of that show.

i think almost every salient point that made that show what it is has been left out of this film, but it seems crazy that they’d leave out the main antagonists altogether like that.

Everything about this production is thoroughly fucked. It’s a more fitting Hannah Montana reboot than Jem minus all the 80s cartoon sci-fi weirdness that people love about Jem. I imagine they’re saving The Misfits for a sequel (which I hope doesn’t happen).

As a film for young teens it’s perfectly fine (though it’s a bunch of jocular men appropriating a female-created work)… but as a Jem film… it’s just a big, sad missed opportunity.

This movie doesn’t even have the Misfits. Their songs were better.

i had a long debate with my sister, whom was a much bigger fan, and she wants to see the sci-fi aspect of it. I hate what i see in the trailer, josie and the pussycats did a better job than what i am see here.
But i have to ask, does anyone think that the film could be successful if they were more true to the original source?

I agree completely. And yeah, I really do think they could do more with the original concept. If they wanted to tell this story with no sci-fi and bank on brand recognition they should’ve rezzed Hannah Montana.

Hannah Montana basically already was a Jem minus the sci-fi reboot, so I’m really not sure why this direction was even considered for this movie.

I really want a New Kids on the Block movie. It would be called Hanging Tough, and it would be 90 minutes of quick-cuts of the dudes doing stupid shit with the greatest synth-line ever playing.

Some of the weakest damage control I think I’ve ever seen:

“LYT: Can you reassure some of the fans right now who are a little upset at the way it looks and feel like it’s not true to the property from what they’ve seen?

JB: It is a hundred per cent true to the spirit of Jem, like 100%, and I think that people will be very pleasantly surprised. So in that way it’s good – maybe lowering expectations is good. But I think people will be pleasantly surprised for sure.”
