ParticipantYou might want to look at the idw comics. They address something similar with a group that was blasting ghosts apart rather than capturing them. In the comics the energy of the ghost was spread out rather than removed or contained. The specific ghost would disappear but energy could combine to form another ghost. The danger is another ghost could gather that energy or it could reform into a new ghost. Wipe out a bunch of small ghosts and you can end up with a much bigger ghost, or wipe out enough big ghost and you could end up with a stay puft size entity.

Keymaster@mijder, when a ghost’s ecto-presence is knocked down to zero, the ghost becomes trappable. If it’s somehow able to avoid capture or get away, its ecto-presence will slowly recharge.
If you’re dealing with a more corporeal or physical entity, then it’s at the GM’s discretion. It could be torn apart, eject a trappable “spirit”, or completely neutralize it.
As for your campaign, take a note from what @garayur said about the comic book. Perhaps the PKE from these untrapped spirits will reform as a more powerful and more malevolent spirit. Maybe a call to the NY Branch (or the Central Florida one 😎 ) will explain it to your busters. “What?! You did WHAT?! You gotta go back there and trap them! Before it’s too late! Didn’t you read the instructions?!”

ParticipantJust discovered that my Ghostbusters adventures were discussed here! Here is a link to the three I’ve written and ran at various conventions over the years:
Keep in mind that these are my rough “at the table” script, so excuse any spelling errors or grammatical mistakes you may encounter. They were originally “for my eyes” only, but numerous requests for them have prompted me to post them publicly for other fans.

KeymasterThanks for sharing @sniderman! Any fun Con stories or words of wisdom about running those games with strangers?

InactiveAnyone that took part in my blind shot attempt at a ghost master might recognize “how dry I am.” But if anyone wants to finish the story will find I’ve changed a few things.

ParticipantI’m getting ready (after much delay) to run a game for the first time on June 6th in Atlanta. As the day approaches I’m thinking about throwing some extra slime dice into the mix (to add to the green ones from my franchise kit).
I think I’ve found the green ones easily-enough to buy separately but I am a staunch defender of Ghostbusters II and kinda feel like throwing some pink slime dice in there.
Is a Chessex 12-pack of d6ers going to match the size of the green ones do you think? I probably ought to trek over to my local game/comic shop and just compare sizes.

Keymaster@tankhammer Absolutely! I believe you’ll find that Chessex’s dice and these are… quite compatible.
If we carried pink slime dice as well would that be something you’d be interested in? (Question for everyone)

Participanti think there can be something other that pink dice to give GB2 a shout out.
I personally don’t see the needMay 20, 2015 at 1:39 pm #47364Doug
ParticipantWe’re obviously huge fans of GB2. We’d actually thought about pink dice before, but I always felt they were a little too hard to read on the table. However, if you think it’ll enhance your game experience, then I’m all for it.

ParticipantMaybe they’d be fun to include in some hypothetical expansion pack in the future.
