Oooooh shit, he’s gonna be in town on the 16th. Crazy, as I’ll be at the same venue for a show a few days before. Just the happening spot in town, I guess.January 31, 2013 at 7:50 pm #28842May 16, 2013 at 2:04 pm #31309July 6, 2013 at 12:25 pm #33198
Apparently Astro covered Back in the USSR on a Beatles tribute record last year? WTF? https://play.spotify.com/track/4Tv5vxBFf3skIoUAXRUDK1August 26, 2013 at 5:31 pm #34005
1) Astro is on tour now. Go see him.
2) He just put out a free cover of Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow”. Here’s the lowdown from the man himself:
A little over a year ago, the folks at RadioLab contacted me about an episode they were working on about “colors”. Now, if you are not familiar with RadioLab, it is an astounding radio show/podcast about the marvelous of area where science, art, and magic all mix. Understandably, it is one of my favorite things ever, and when they asked to be apart of this episode, I was over the moon! The episode was going to be focusing on colors, what color is, how we relate to color, etc, and they wanted to get various musicians they liked to cover songs about color to soundtrack the entire episode.
So, naturally, i chose: “Black & Yellow” by Wiz Khalifa
So I enlisted the help of my dear friend Rickolus to shape the backbone of the song with pianos and synths, then I brought in the talented Erica Burton to add layers and layers of strings to really doll up this ditty…and make it the prettiest version of “Black & Yellow” ever. RadioLab never used the song, and I am too damn proud of the way this turned out to let it sit on the shelf any longer!
So here you go, have this for free, since it is summer, and the sun is shining: http://astronautalis.bandcamp.com/track/black-yellowJanuary 31, 2014 at 7:05 pm #36851
I was asleep at the wheel when this got posted. Fun colors are sold out, but I got a copy and that’s what matters.February 22, 2014 at 6:33 pm #37279
Back when Astro was working on This is Our Science he asked me if it’d be cool if he rerecorded “The City Ain’t Just a Skyline” the track he composed as grand prize for our Tetris Rap Attack contest. I said sure thing, he looked into contacting the fella who made the original beat (Evers McGee), the record came out without the song on it, and I never heard a word about it.
But now – Astro has some great news about his past records AND he’s dropped three free songs one of which is the re-recorded version of “The City Ain’t Just a Skyline”! http://astronautalis.com/new-music-for-free/February 23, 2014 at 12:02 am #37294
How is that springsteen record, @cap? Times being what they are, I haven’t been able to check it out.
Looks like the 3 free songs were only free for the first 1000 downloaders, a cap which has been reached already it would seem.February 23, 2014 at 2:33 pm #37296
The Springsteen track is good! (If only it came with a download code) It’s interesting actually because the music and mixing completely takes precedent over Andy’s vocals. The vocals in many ways just become a supplemental instrument.February 24, 2014 at 9:41 pm #37340
Pretty much right after I posted that, I saw that the Springsteen track is on Soundcloud now:

Astro’s long-gestating collab with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver is streaming now! They’re working under the name “Jason Feathers”August 12, 2014 at 9:52 am #41183
That is a really interesting record, I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. The press release fictitious backstory is amusing, and adds to the experience of it. There’s something really Florida about the pitch-shifted vocals.August 19, 2014 at 8:41 am #41344
