All-New Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Teaser Trailer Coming with Captain America: Civil War [Exclusive]

Posted by Cat on January 8, 2016

Still recoiling from the shock of having seen a brand-new Star Wars movie? Well, settle in, ’cause there’s a whole new film less than a year away and we’ll get our first real glimpse on May 6th.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story releases on December 16th, 2016 and is the first Star Wars spin-off film, taking place outside the series’ numbered episodes. Directed by Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards, the film tells the story of the Rebels who stole the Death Star plans just prior to Episode IV: A New Hope.

State of the Empire, our Star Wars podcasting team, has heard from a reliable industry source that the trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will hit theaters attached to Captain America: Civil War. Easy guess says fans will see it online two days prior for May the Fourth. The even bigger deal? This teaser is not the teaser shown to fans at 2015’s Star Wars Celebration.

The previous teaser, which has still not been officially released, was created before shooting had begun. It featured a pan through a jungle canyon with a voice over lifted from Alec Guinness’ Obi-Wan: “For more than a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times, before the Empire.” Pan up to the sky to see a single TIE Fighter flying and the eventual reveal that the moon on the horizon is, in fact, the Death Star. (See phone-captured footage of that teaser below.)

So what can we expect from this new teaser trailer? Likely something akin to the first teaser we saw from The Force Awakens back in November 2014. Keep in mind fellow nerds, even with Star Wars being omnipresent over the past month, there’s still a lot of folks out in the world who have no idea that we’re getting a Star Wars movie a year, from now ’til eternity. What’s more, the teaser we got at Celebration likely wouldn’t be enough to express the gravity of Rogue One‘s premise to the average moviegoer. Our theory on the big surprise that this coming trailer has in store? Darth Vader. That’s purely our own conjecture, though there’s evidence to suggest that the Dark Lord will be making his cinematic return in this film.

This release date was first rumored on MakingStarWars.Net on January 5th, but we’ve confirmed via a completely different source that it will be releasing with Captain America and that this trailer is not the same as the teaser seen last year.
