Kinda the last one. The artificial crystals crashing down on earth and filling the atmosphere basically saturated the planet in a radiation that caused rampant mutation in all life. Not saying that humanity transformed on contact, but at the very least any future children weren’t human any more.

That might very well be an apocalypse worse than having the planet ruined by full on thermonuclear war. Having children to only find them to be non-human…. What do you do with a child like that?

Though it doesn’t seem obvious for a super mutation cataclysm to produce a world that is mostly wasteland. Wouldn’t the huge new variety of life find ways to thrive more rather than less than the ‘standard’ life that came before it? That doesn’t have to be true, of course, but I’m not sure wasteland is the obvious next step that comes after this mutation event either. I think you’d need an extra step to make it unambiguous how you got the earth in the state it is now, or have the event be more extinction-y.

I guess, going back to my first point and how terrible this new world would seem for the people in it; unable to propagate the human race, they could try to cleanse it with atomic fire. But double apocalypse? That feels cheap.

Well, this massive, globe-fucking event then kicks off a huge war. Nothing even to fight for at first except the various blames that get placed and everyone is scared and angry. Then it turns into a resource war. Major calamities, minor calamities, and with life on Earth rising up against itself to boot, the world humanity created crumbles in no time. As for “the Wasteland” it doesn’t end up being all there is. The scorched earth ends up being only one, albiet large part of the Earth that the Lightning Dogs discover.

Right, that’s a totally acceptable way of getting from crystal contamination to the death of the human civilization. Such a chain of events is very nuanced and natural, but I feel a more instantaneous transition could be more dramatic, cleaner and ’satisfying’.

At one point, didn’t we talk about a crystal-laden space facility crashing down? I think that gives you a clean “The US is a crash site wasteland, but the rest of the world is a fallout mutant place” I think

I had always figured a ton of humans died in the initial catastrophe. Think of how many people rely on technology every day just to eat and drink. Once that infrastructure collapses, the whole world is thrown back into the 1700’s. And there is definitely not enough resources to go around. I think wars, disease, and starvation did the most damage. And while I’m sure some humans out there gave birth to weird creatures, I honestly hadn’t thought too much about it because I find the idea so dark and horrific. Like that nightmare scene from “The Fly.” I get squeamish just thinking about it.

    Question time

    a simple one
I notice that the military dogs have dog collars on, are they the Dog version military dog tags? Also in the “thing names” episode I remember Doug bring up throat mics do the collars double those too?

@thebigbadshadowman When you finally get to see/hear the meeting where the current designs come from, we discuss it very briefly. As of right now, they’re designed to kinda be both. It’ll depend on how they’ll serve the story once we start writing actual episodes for the story bible. (Which is happening very soon.)

    question time

What happens to robots after they fail to kill Glampire, I take it most of them end up busted pretty badly? Do they become spare parts for Nagel or do they just become scrap metal?

oh I just had twisted idea a pretty twisted big bad idea a fate worst then permanent shutdown. What if Glampire toss the would be assassins to the glass spiders, were the spiders when would use their crystalline webs to slowly drain the power of the robots to help recharge and/or grow new crystals? It would really sucks for any robots that are solar powered.

I’m willing to bet each robot assassin runs a self-destruct sequence as soon as it’s clear their attempt failed. Leaving most of their parts unusable and untraceable. Nagel is in tip-top condition anyway. But if he somehow found an upgrade he liked, I’m sure he’d have no qualms about taking it.

that would bring up a few questions what would the robots consider the point that they had failed at their attempt and what would the main method of self-destruct?

Well, one major issue with this long-standing proposal about intermittent robotic assassinations is we’ve never talked about it past what you’ve heard. We don’t really know the hows or whys – just speculation on our parts. Nothing concrete.

I’m not sure on how they get destroyed but it would be really cool for Captain Scrap to build his crew off the failed bots.

    Question time

since laser guns are going to play into Lightning Dogs, how do the different types of crystals effect laser weapons? Is it more an ammo capacity thing and or the amount of damage laser can do?

It’s kind of an integrity thing. You use a dumpy crystal you’re going to get less powerful shots, fewer of them, or a really unstable beam – depending on the weapon you’ve plugged them into and the settings available.
