NERDY POLL :: Should Dungeons & Doritos Have Music?

March 15th, 2010

dnd-black

Well, despite our original trepidations that anyone would want to sit around listening to us playing DnD, Team Nerdy Show is now four episodes into the arguably most anticipated portion of Nerdy Show, Dungeons & Doritos. We are very glad that you seem to wholeheartedly enjoy the misadventures of Jamela, CHAIR, Jen’Ifer, and Vimak.

However, there seems to be only one thing y’all seem to have a differing mind when it comes to the show, and that’s whether or not we should have musical breaks in the adventures. We started with music, as it was an actual episode of Nerdy Show to begin with, and continued it out of tradition, but before long we heard complaints (be they via comment, random forum posts that we lurk, or IRL convos) that it should go without music. Unsure if this was a universal thought or that those who enjoyed music in the episodes were the silent majority, we had our last episode, Mid-Day in the Maze of Mischief, sans-music, only to hear a wave of complaints as well as a wave of huzzahs!

Well, nerds and geeks, we are done guessing. There’s really only one way to solve this problem: democratically. We have opened up a poll that shall run until March 31st, 2010 at 8 PM Eastern to vote on your thoughts on music in Dungeons & Doritos. Let us know your thoughts, because we love hearing from you, and without you, we would just be talking to ourselves, which we do the rest of the week ANYWAYS. So go and vote! :)

The conclusion:

Word on the street is that most of you like having music.  That’s pretty darn cool.  So, in future episodes, look forward to a few tracks at chapter-like intervals – either setting the mood, riffing off in-game jokes, or just generally enhancing your RPG listening experience.  Thanks to everyone who participated.  It is written in Galdap’s tomes that you are awesome.

We’ve got more Dungeons & Doritos on the way, and some exciting plans in store – so stay tuned.  May is going to be a big month for DnD.

I like having the music, but I think there should just be less of it during a DnD episode, like definitely an intro and outro song and maybe 2 or 3 song breaks during the episode.

The guy above me said it best. I like the music a lot because I rarely have the time to sit and listen to an entire episode in one sitting, but sometimes it’s a bit much.

Personally, I enjoy the music. It’s a nice change of pace, plus it produces some enjoyable visuals. For example I totally pictured you guys busting out in dance when you played that “Dead on the Dance Floor” song a few episodes back. That was a perfect accompaniment to the episode and I would hate to see those little bits go away, they make the show all the more enjoyable.

I can understand people not wanting the breaks in the action, but I really can’t stand to listen to people just talk for 2 hours straight, no matter the subject.

Dungeons and doritos should only have CHIP tunes.

    All together now…

As for the music, I think it should stay a part of the Nerdy Show. That’s where I go when I want to discover people, but when I(we) listen to D’n'D, I think that’s all it should be.

I agree with arkais, and intro and outro song would be good. I would also point out that the music has at least once ilustrated a joke, when mike mentioned the kobold having an underbeard.

I personally like the music, especially when its DnD related.
I find the episode more entertaining that way.

I’m in the yes to music department. Mayyyyyyyybe a little less if you guys feel that way, but personally I love the stuff you guys (or is it just Hex?) play.

I do like the music a lot. Especially the DnD and fantasy themed stuff. I do think there should maybe be less during a Dungeons and Doritos episode… unlike the Nerdy Show proper, hich is built around the music breaks the music in Dungeons and Doritoes is obviously added afterwards which tends to interrupt the flo of the game a tad. I dont think they should have breaks during recording or anything, but its a bit like when they add breaks into BBC tv shows.

I’d be in favour of no music, but you guys choose good music. Make one file with music, throw in music on another file, host both.

As I said in the most recent episode, the music of D&D podcasts is what brought me to nerdcore music. The first poster I think is correct: a song for intro, outro, and maybe 2 or 3 in the episode, and extras to illustrate jokes.

Not too much chip tunes though, they make my ears bleed

Love the music in the nerdy show, but hate it in D&D. I just want to be able to focus on the crazy adventures of CHAIR & Co without music of unleveled volume interrupting. It’s not that it isn’t _good_, but it really hurts the flow for me and has made it tough to listen to the whole podcast. Please, no more music in D&D!

Although I voted no, I also wouldn’t mind a few breaks, maybe 4-5 songs altogether? Just don’t do 2 songs in one break segment. something like, “Intro, 1st quarter, middle, 3rd quarter, Outro”.

I enjoyed the earlier episodes, when most of the songs were about D and D. I liked the Krondor Krew ones, personally. Maybe restrict songage to in intro and outro only?

Exactly what Arkais said. An intro and outro would round it out just fine and a few songs would break up the game so we would not feel burned out on it.

I’m gonna resound the intro/outro idea, and add maybe some lite ambient music in the background might give it an epic feel
