Kirby Krackle’s E For Everyone
All of you comic book music lovers out there have been pampered over the course of 2010! Why, back in my day all we had was one epic track from Jim’s Big Ego about the Flash, and we LIKED IT! Nowdays, you got a whole SLEW of tracks courtesy of Adam WarRock, the more-than-occasional reference over at the FuMP, and you EVEN have Sci-Fried and Marc with a C teaming up to make music about comic villains!! That’s how pampered you kids are! Before all that, nerd music was a veritable wasteland in the realm of comic love.
Last year, though, Kirby Krackle stepped up to the plate to combat this problem. Now I’m not saying that these guys necessarily inspired this recent renaissance of comic inspired music… but let’s just say that they may be big enough to get Joe Quesada on stage with them… you know, the editor-in-freaking-chief of Marvel! This year they released their sophomore album, E For Everyone, and have been turning heads wherever they go.
Showing love to both DC and Marvel alike in this album, these guys run the gamut in not only concept but music styles as well, be it seen in the intensity of “Ring Capacity” or the smooth funk and comedy of “Can I Watch You?” It’s hard to just choose a handful of tracks that standout as favorites from this album. Some, such as “Great Lake Avengers” and “Ring Capacity” jumped out at me – primarily because of the familiarity and love of the subject matter – while others like “On and On” were sleeper hits for me, taking some time to truly appreciate not only the topic, but the music as well… and I kind of have a closer affinity to these tracks now.
Each track tells not only a very unique story (or take on a story) but also shows you exactly how big of fan-boys these guys truly are. The references they make or concepts they invoke are subtle, obscure, and often insightful. It’s also hard to personally pull myself from the fan-boy side of myself and just applaud the album for the musical sophistication that Kirby Krackle is showcasing. For me, it stands to show that they are truly phenomenal twofold artists – not only musically, but also being able to kindle the love for comics in most nerds out there.
CONCLUSION: 4.0/5.0
This album shows a lot of talent and potential in Kirby Krackle, and I am truly excited to see what comes next from these guys. This is one of the top releases for nerd music in 2010, leading charge in what could easily be called the “Silver Age of Nerd Music.” Do NOT miss it!
